Cherry Blossoms, UW Quad, Seattle, Washington

Day Eighty-Nine: Today was incredible! I’ve waited for this moment for months and it finally arrived – the cherry blossoms were in full (70% is close enough) bloom. Half of Seattle decided to join my daughter and me on this glorious day. There was no chance of getting photos without people, so I embraced it and included the crowds. There was a buzz in the air with so many admirers congregated. People of all ages admired the incredible scene clipped from a fairy tale book. I wish I could have warned you to look away if flowers make you nauseous. Ha Ha. I cut many photos from my collection but these were the lucky ones.

The following is a blurb I found on the UW website. The iconic cherry trees in the University of Washington’s Quad reached peak bloom March 29, and this weekend will be prime viewing to see the blossoms. Peak bloom is when at least 70 percent of the blossoms have emerged. The amount of daylight and favorable temperatures are the two most important factors that determine bloom timing, said Sara Shores, UW arborist. If it stays cool, with little rain or wind, the blossoms could stay on the trees for as long as two or three weeks. Peak bloom is about a week or two later than usual, probably because of the record-breaking snowstorm and cooler temperatures this winter, Shores said. The 29 large cherry trees in the Quad are about 86 years old and healthy. A number of other cherry trees live across campus, but the species in the Quad, “Somei-yoshino,” usually blooms before the others each season. Each species has its own typical bloom time.

Wow, eighty-six years old? These trees look so healthy and happy. They’ve had a good life it seems. I’ve been curious if the Japanese species of cherry trees bear fruit. According to Wikipedia, the Somei-Yoshino trees produce “unpalatable” berries. Inquiring minds are satisfied.

We walked about three miles around campus up and down the “Ave” looking for the UW Bookstore. We found it and Edd helped us out. My daughter chose stuffed husky, of course, for her friend’s birthday today. It was another successful walk and beautiful day with one my kiddos.

Thank you for visiting my blog. Please excuse a few glitches in the two blocks above. Small issue with WordPress tonight.
